It is estimated that there are 69 million persons who sustain a concussion throughout the world each year. A concussion is difficult to diagnose. This causes athletes to continue playing a sport, military personnel to maintain engagement placing themselves and others at risk of injury, persons to continue driving automobiles, etc.
A concussion can affect spatial judgment and depth perception, cognitive function, and decision making and will cause characteristics and symptoms that can be subtle and often misdiagnosed.
A concussion:
- Is often missed or misdiagnosed.
- There are no rapid short testing means for concussion.
- Can place the person as well as others at great risk for secondary injury.
- Can lead to chronic state of debilitation due to symptoms that evolve over time.
- Many symptoms caused by concussion do not appear for days and even weeks following the initial injury.
- There is limited quantitative testing to diagnose a concussion.
- CT scans and MRI cannot diagnose a concussion.
NICAD™ is an advanced concept screening device for substance abuse and for determining if a person has received a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI or concussion). The instrument assesses visual processing dysfunction caused by substance abuse or concussion. The instrument is portable and will take only a few moments to conduct the test.
